Title : Protocol for treatment of facial palsy with physical therapy modalities and alternative medicine method

Abstract:

Facial paralysis treatment refers to weakness of the facial muscles, which mainly results from temporary or permanent damage to the facial nerve. When the facial nerve is either damaged or non-functional, the muscles in the face do not receive the necessary signals in order to function properly. This results in paralysis of the affected part of the face, which can affect movement of the eyes, mouth, and other areas of the face. The aim of our presentation is to represent protocol for treatment of it with physical therapy and alternative medicine methods. Material and method: This research is our experience in treatment of facial palsy, follow up with House–Brackmann score. Results: treatment is starting in subacute stage, after medicament treatment by neurologist.

The physical modalities are following: electro therapy (iontophoresis, interferential current, electro gymnastic current, intracranial electro stimulation) Light therapy (Low level laser therapy, polarised light), massage, aroma massage, electroacupuncture, acupuncture, manual lymph drainage and active exercises by PNF concept. The effect of treatment is analysing with score and EMG. Discussion: facial palsy some time when the aetiology is polyneuropathy or virus infection can be difficult for treatment with long time in from 6-12 months. We have good results for short time of 3 months. Conclusion: facial palsy can be difficult condition but our protocol give the possibilities to treated patient multidisciplinary with medicament, physical therapy, alternative medicine and exercises. The effect of treatment depends of the level of nerve lesion. Intracranial stimulation is also one possible treatment.
