Title : Cerebral palsy a journey and my ordeals with spasticity

Abstract:

Living with mild spastic paraparesis has been both a challenge and a catalyst for growth, shaping my personal and professional journey. From an early age, symptoms such as toe walking and frequent falls taught me resilience and adaptability. As I navigated adolescence, the diagnosis brought clarity but also underscored the complexities of managing chronic spasticity and mobility challenges.

My medical journey has included interventions like Botulinum toxin injections, tendon lengthening, and bilateral gastrosoleus release, which provided temporary relief but highlighted the importance of individualized care. A major turning point was the implantation of an Intrathecal Baclofen Pump (ITBP) in 2024, which significantly improved my mobility and quality of life. However, complications such as catheter discontinuity and cerebrospinal fluid leaks reminded me of the unpredictable nature of medical interventions and the value of persistence.

These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR). Through medical school and residency, I combined my lived experiences with evidence-based approaches to spasticity management and rehabilitation. Research initiatives, such as exploring mirror therapy for stroke patients and Botox efficacy in spasticity, deepened my commitment to advancing PMR practices.

Professionally, I strive to promote innovative rehabilitation strategies while advocating for patient-centered care. My personal challenges have reinforced the importance of resilience, adaptability, and interdisciplinary collaboration in overcoming barriers. They have also shaped my understanding of the patient’s perspective, enabling me to connect deeply with those I serve.

This journey highlights how adversity can inspire growth and innovation, driving my dedication to improving rehabilitation outcomes. My experiences continue to fuel a passion for advancing PMR, proving that challenges can be transformed into opportunities for discovery and impact.
