Title : Hydrogen medicine: An innovative modality for enhancing recovery and functional outcomes in physical medicine and rehabilitation

Abstract:

Modern Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) seeks effective strategies to accelerate tissue repair, manage pain and fatigue, and restore optimal function. Hydrogen medicine, founded on the application of active hydrogen, offers a novel, scientifically-grounded approach to address these core challenges.

As a selective antioxidant, active hydrogen's minimal molecular size grants it unique bioavailability, enabling it to penetrate cellular membranes, muscle tissue, and the blood-brain barrier. It effectively neutralizes cytotoxic Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) – key drivers of exercise-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) – while preserving vital signaling molecules. This action reduces oxidative damage at the site of injury or strain, modulates inflammatory pathways, and supports mitochondrial function for improved cellular energy (ATP) production. Our experimental studies confirm that hydrogen-enriched solutions exhibit high antioxidant activity, significantly suppressing biomarkers of oxidative stress such as Lipid PerOxidation (LPO).

Since establishing the world's first hydrogen medicine clinic in 1993, our clinical experience with over 70,000 patients demonstrates the therapeutic potential of this modality. A comprehensive protocol for hydrogen therapy has been developed and refined over decades. To translate this clinical success into daily life, we pioneered and patented the world's first household hydrogen generators (2009, 2015) and subsequently the first dietary supplement for hydrogenating food and beverages (2018). This allows for continuous antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support, which is crucial for managing chronic fatigue and supporting long-term recovery phases.

Therefore, integrating hydrogen-based interventions – both in-clinic therapy and through at-home nutritional strategies – into PM&R frameworks represents a logical step to enhance recovery trajectories. By targeting the fundamental mechanisms of oxidative stress and energy metabolism, hydrogen medicine provides a safe, non-invasive adjunct therapy. Its application is aimed at improving functional outcomes, accelerating return to activity, and elevating the quality of life for patients undergoing rehabilitation.

Ashot Khachatryan, MD, PhD, Professor, is an Active Member of the European Academy of Natural Sciences and the New York Academy of Sciences. A pioneer in hydrogen medicine, he founded the world's first hydrogen medicine clinic in 1993. With over 30 years of clinical experience, he has developed a unique integrative protocol combining hydrogen therapy (inhalations, infusions, bath and other) with hydrogen-enriched nutrition to address chronic conditions and enhance recovery. His innovations include internationally patented the world's first household hydrogen generators and the world's first dietary supplement for hydrogenating food products. He is the author of over 60 patents, 10 monographs, and a recipient of numerous international awards.
