Title : Wearables and health - The human machine manual

Abstract:

The rapid evolution of wearable technologies is transforming the way individuals understand, monitor, and manage their health. From smartwatches and biosensors to AI-enabled health platforms, wearable devices are creating a new paradigm of continuous, personalized, and preventive healthcare. This presentation, wearables and health – The human machine manual, explores how wearable technologies can empower individuals to become active participants in their own wellbeing while supporting clinicians with real-time physiological and behavioural data.

Drawing on over a decade of practical experience in gamification, lifestyle medicine, and digital health engagement, the presentation introduces the concept of the “Human Machine Manual” a framework that helps people better understand the relationship between behaviour, biology, and technology. The session examines how wearables can support physical rehabilitation, healthy ageing, chronic disease prevention, stress management, sleep optimisation, and physical activity adherence. Particular emphasis is placed on behaviour change, motivation, and the integration of artificial intelligence to convert raw biometric data into meaningful and actionable health insights.

The presentation also addresses emerging challenges surrounding data privacy, digital literacy, accuracy, and ethical use of personal health information. By combining advances in wearable technologies with lifestyle medicine principles, healthcare professionals can move towards a more predictive, preventive, personalised, and participatory model of care. This keynote highlights the growing role of wearable technologies as practical tools for rehabilitation, self-management, and long-term health optimisation in both clinical and community settings.
