Title : Development of a korean version of home and community environment instrument

Abstract:

Objectives: Home and Community Environment instrument is a self-report assessment tool, consisting 36 questionnaires and 6 domains: communication device, community mobility, transportation, attitude, home mobility and basic mobility device, designed to assess the home and community environments on the base of ICF concept. It could be used to establish the discharge plan of rehabilitation patients to evaluate patients’ residential environment and community mobility at discharge. Therefore, the aim of this study is to verify reliability and validity of the Korean version of Home and Community Environment Instrument.
Method: In order to verify the construct validity, Korean version of Craig Hospital Inventory of Environmental Factors(CHIEF25), WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version(WHOQOL-BREF) and the subjective environmental improvement satisfaction questionnaires were correlated and the validity were examined. Descriptive statistics were analyzed for the general characteristics and medical characteristics of the subjects, and the test results were analyzed by correlation analysis and test-re-test reliability verification.
Results: A total of 100 patients (67 males and 33 females) participated in this study, and 68 of them performed test-retest reliability verification. The mean age of the subjects was 59.5 years and the diagnosis were stroke 61%, and spinal cord injury 31%. As a result of the reliability test, the Cronbach's Alpha value was 0.7 or higher and the significance probability was within 0.01 in all items. In the validity analysis, there were significant correlations between the CHIEF25 and communication device, community mobility, and transportation domain of Home and Community Environment. And the correlations of communication devices and attitudes domain of Home and Community Environment with the WHOQOL-BRIEF were confirmed. Home mobility, communication device, transportation and attitude domain of Home and Community Environment showed a correlation with subjective environmental improvement satisfaction questionnaires.
Conclusion: The Korean version of the Home and Community Environment instrument was developed to help establishing a discharge plan for rehabilitation patients. This instrument might be useful tool for evaluating their home and community environment for the disabled in Korea.
